Halterman and Berkmeyer Share Lead at Normandie Amateur

Scores surprisingly high on perfect day for golf at the 2014 Normandie Amateur Championship.

A familiar face shares the overnight lead at the Normandie Amateur. Skip Berkmeyer will play in the final pairing tomorrow after a Saturday 70 placed him into a tie for 1st with University of Missouri-St. Louis Men’s Golf Coach, Troy Halterman.

Halterman made 3 birdies to against 2 bogeys on his opening round. The UMSL Golf Coach bogeyed the par 3, 3rd hole but answered with consecutive birdies on 8 and 9 to turn at 1-under. His only other bogey of the round came at the difficult par 4, 11th before taking advantage of the short par 4, 13th. “The pins were hard to get close to today,” commented Halterman in explanation of the higher first round scores.

Berkmeyer is no stranger to the final pairing on Sunday at the Normandie Amateur. Teeing in the last group on Saturday, Berkmeyer matched Halterman’s 70 with 3 birdies and 2 bogeys of his own. Berkmeyer owned the par 3’s on the front side, carding 2’s at both the 3rd and 5th holes. A bogey on the par 5, 7th hole was his only blemish on the outgoing nine. Berkmeyer would also make bogey on the par 4, 11th before getting the shot back on the short par 5, 15th.

It will by no means be a two player race tomorrow in the final round as several notable players are near the lead. Past Champion, Dr. Andy Frost will start the final round 3 shots off the pace after a whirlwind first round. Frost stood at 4 over par standing on the 9th tee before making birdie on the downhill dog leg left par 4. He would give the shot right back on the 10th before rattling off birdies at 12, 13 and 15. A bogey on the final hole left him at 73 for his opening 18 holes.

Joe Molitor’s round may actually exceed Frost’s in the category of highs and lows. Molitor started out with double bogy 6 on the opening hole and a double bogey 5 on the par 3, 3rd. After compounding the pain with a bogey on the relatively easy par 5, 4th he turned the momentum. Molitor made birdie on 6, and 7 and then made an eagle 2 on the par 4, 8th. He finished his front nine with another birdie to turn Even par for the tournament. He would then proceed to get to 3-under for the tournament after birdies on 12, 13 and 15 before making a triple bogey 6 on the par 3, 16th. Molitor will start the final round 1 shot off the pace and paired with the leaders at 12:40pm.

Joining Frost in the 12:30pm pairing is Ted Moloney and fellow Bellerive Country Club Member, Brian Lovett. Moloney is fresh off a victory at the Bob Cochran Mid Amateur Championship at Fox Run Golf Club and carded a 3-over, 74 in the opening round as did Lovett.

Another recent champion, Phil Caravia will start the day 5 off the pace after a first round 75. Caravia won the season opening Old Warson Match Play Championship and posted 7 bogeys along with 3 birdies on Saturday at Normandie Golf Course.
