Bob Gaus continued his dominance of the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course at the 2014 Publinx.  Gaus secured a one shot victory over a slew of players including Nash Haxel, Dave Levine and Colin Neeman.  JC Anderson, Brian Fogt and John Kelly finished 2 shots off the pace.

Similar to Gaus’, Don Bliss has enjoyed his fair share of success at Forest Park. Bliss posted a 69 and shot advantage of Jack Eisenbeis in the Senior Amateur Division.

May 5 – Sixteen players remain in the mix at the 2014 Gateway PGA Match Play Championship taking place at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, IL.

The No. 1 seed, Mike Suhre of OakBrook Golf Course advanced and faces Jason Woods on Tuesday morning. Nash Haxel of The Quarry at Crystal Springs will battle another veteran of the Gateway Section, Rob Sedorcek of the Country Club of St. Albans.

Brian Fogt, fresh off his sweep of the regular and senior divisions of a recent Section Pro-Open, will square off against another of the top Senior players in the field in Jeff Whitfield. Whitfield advanced after defeating Fox Run Golf Club’s Dennis Biedenstein.

Chase Smith defeated Mark Faulkner, 4&2 and now gets Tom Sipula with the winner getting the opportunity to face the winner of Fogt or Whitfield.

On the bottom half of the bracket is the No. 2 seed and recent winner of the Publinx Open, Bob Gaus who plays J.D. Auping in the round of 16.

The winner of Gaus / Auping will face the winner of Ryan Roy and Jeff Escott. Both Roy and Escott enjoyed easy victories on Monday winning their respective matches 6&4 and 6&5.

JC Anderson also enjoyed a relative easy walk around Annbriar Golf Course on Monday winning 6&5 over host professional, Kevin Schaeffer. Anderson will play Scott Brauer in the round of 16.

Jimmy Bals defeated Shane Blankenship 4&3 on Monday and faces Ty Zimmerman of the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club who knocked off Executive Director, Josh Riley in their first round of the championship.

Bellerive CC Teaching Professional Brian Fogt came out firing shooting and impressive 5-under par round of 66 to capture the first Player of the Year Point Event at Persimmon Woods GC.  Fogt, playing the 6700 yard, par 71 layout, competed in both the Regular & Senior Divisions and his score was good enough for victories over a large field of competitors.

In the Regular Division, Fogt claimed a 2 shot victory over the 57 player field, with Jeff Schmidt & Ryan Roy tieing for runner-up honors with 3-under par 68’s.  Mike Tucker was 4th with 69 and Mike Suhre rounded out the top 5 with a round of 70.

The Senior Division boasted a field of 19 players and Brian’s 66 gave him a 4-stroke win over Persimmon Woods Charlie Stock who finished at 1-under par 70.  Stock impressive score beat his age by 3 and Nash Haxel of The Quarry at Crystal Springs finished 3rd with an even par 71.

JC Anderson along with 2013 PGA Cup Team Member, Rod Perry, started the final round of the 2014 Senior-Junior Team Championship one shot off the lead.  Paired in the final group with 54-hole leaders, Steve Schneiter and Shaun Powers, the duo of Anderson / Perry posted a final round 66 for a 2 shot victory (-26), earning each player a nice winter payday of $5,000.

Other notables in the field included Larry Emery of Carterville, IL who played with Tim Puetz of Jupiter, FL.  Emery and Puetz finished T8, 7 shots off the pace set by Anderson and Perry.

Former Gateway Section Member, Jerry Tucker finished T22 with partner Jay Westerlund finished T22 at -16.

A pair of Gateway Section players, Nash Haxel and Mike Tucker finished the 72 hole best ball championship at -13 and in T38.

The 37th Annual PGA National Assistant’s Championship presented by National Car Rental is being played in Port St. Lucie, FL this weekend.  Representing the Gateway PGA are Adam Betz of Meadowbrook Country Club and Jeffrey Schmid.

Betz took advantage of the par 5’s in his opening round, making birdie on 3 out of his 4 chances.  Only a double bogey on the 14th hole, Betz’ 5th of the day, slowed down his fast start as he posted a 3-under, 69 on the Wanamaker Course.

JC Anderson and Bob Gaus of the Gateway PGA will be two of very few players to be teeing it up in the 2013 Senior PGA Championship and 2013 PGA Championship. Anderson qualified for his 2nd PGA Championship by virtue of a fantastic final round at this years Professional National Championship.  Gaus made it a bit more dramatic making birdie on the first hole as part of a six for three playoff.

Gideon Smith (Quincy CC), Mark Faulkner (Lake Egypt CC), JC Anderson (Mid Rivers GL) and Bob Gaus (Tower Tee) are set to tee it up this week in the 46th PGA Professional National Championship at Sunriver Resort in Oregon, June 23-26.  This marks the third visit to Sunriver Resort for the PGA Professional National Championship which brings 312 players from 41 PGA Sections.

The top 20 finishers earn a berth in the PGA Championship as the top players in the world convene on Oak Hill Country Club for the season’s final major championship.
