Old Warson Country Club is set to host the 2014 championship of it’s own name May 3 & 4 as the top 16 amateurs compete in the season’s first Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association Points Event. The 16 players in the field were invited based on their finish on the 2013 Metropolitan Amateur of the Year Points Standings.
Skip Berkmeyer (Aberdeen GC) will once again assume the #1 seed in the championship after capturing the 2013 Player of the Year honors. Berkmeyer is a 5-time Match Play Championship, 3 of those wins coming at Old Warson Country Club. Berkmeyer will face Sam Migdal, also playing out of Aberdeen Golf Club.
Berkmeyer will be looking to rebound from an uncharacteristic early exit in last year’s championship when he lost in 20 holes to 16 seeded Thomas Wuennenberg. Wuennenberg would go on to the play in the championship match where he eventually lost to Garrett Sneed.
Occupying the #2 seed in the championship is 2-time Metropolitan Amateur Champion Kyle Weldon. Weldon traditionally hasn’t been able to compete in the tournament due to his competitive schedule at Kansas State University. Weldon will face Corey Choate of Wolf Hollow Golf Club. Choate will also be looking to redeem himself from a disappointing 2013 appearance when he lost 3&2 to Joe Migdal in the first round.
A staple in this championship over the years, veteran amateur Phil Caravia (Norwood Hills CC) will play as the #3 seed and face Brian Lovett in the first round. Lovett lost in the title match of the 2013 St. Louis District Championship.
Joe Migdal earned the #4 seed and will face Bob Hanneken of Aberdeen GC. Hanneken is the most recent champion of the East Side Amateur and winner of last year’s Publinx Open.
Alex Cusumano (#5 seed) will play another of the young guns in Michael Wooten (Whitmoor CC) who earned the #12 seed.
Last year’s Match Play Champion, Garrett Sneed, will enter the tournament as the #6 seed and play the 2013 Senior Player of the Year, Jeff Johnson (Bogey Hills CC) in the round of 16.
Steven Souchek (#7 seed) will play 2013 Semi-Finalist in the Match Play, Ted Moloney (Greenbriar Hills).
Dr. Andy Frost (Bellerive CC) will play Buddy Allen (Joachim GC) in the 8 vs. 9 match up on Saturday morning.
Quarterfinal matches will be played in the afternoon on Saturday. Sunday morning the Semifinal matches will begin at 7:00am with the 18-hole final match beginning approximately 11:30am.
Follow all the matches via the MAGA website from the outset Saturday morning. Spectators are welcome to attend the matches and see the area’s top amateurs contend for the 2014 Old Warson Cup.
