ST. LOUIS, MO. – University of Missouri-St. Louis head men’s golf coach Troy Halterman has been selected to lead a USA Athletes International (USAAI) team in the IGI Series in St. Andrews, Scotland from August 5-13, 2013.
The USAAI team, composed of select athletes from across the Great Lakes Valley Conference will travel to Scotland to compete in a series of friendly matches against various Scotland club members. Players from across the country are recommended for the team based on two key elements: (1) their athletic ability and (2) their ability to represent their country, school and hometown in a positive manner.
Halterman will coach two of his current golfers on the trip, including junior Joe Atkisson and senior Chase Smith. Other student-athletes include Drury’s Gabe Laske and Zach Tate; Maryville’s Michael Fowler and Nick Lees; Quincy’s Andrew Boudreau; Lewis’ Brandon White; Indianapolis’ Max Bowling; Saint Joseph’s Garrett Bianchi; and Illinois-Springfield’s Jake Wherley.
“Coach Halterman is an excellent example of the type of athletic ambassador and mentor USA Athletes International seeks to bring into international competition. He will bring the term ambassador to life on this trip, showing the GLVC athletes and the Scottish community his passion for the game that he has had the opportunity to excel in here in the States,” stated Nick Vaughn, Golf Program Coordinator at USA Athletes International. “Troy is taking the opportunity to represent UMSL and the GLVC as an ambassador for the sport of golf and the USA. Troy is definitely making the best of this opportunity and we are all proud to have him as a part of our program.”
In addition to competing, the team will also take time to tour Scotland, learning all about the history and culture of the historic country.
USA Athletes International is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities that are facilitated through athletic competition.
With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level.
